ENR Magazine honors first U.S. suspension bridge with Ultra-High Performance Concrete overlay

Chryso, a global leader in sustainable construction solutions and part of Saint-Gobain Construction Chemicals, proudly announces that its concrete admixtures were instrumental in the Delaware Memorial Bridge Deck Rehabilitation Project, which has been awarded the prestigious ENR Regional Best Project Award. Recognizing innovative construction achievements, this honor is a testament to groundbreaking project design and team excellence across the United States.

On October 25, 2024, Engineering News Record (ENR) Magazine honored the Delaware Memorial Bridge Deck Rehabilitation Project as the 2024 Mid-Atlantic Regional Best Project in the Highway/Bridge category. Independent juries of industry leaders from ENR’s regional editions selected winners based on a rigorous evaluation of safety, innovation, and teamwork.

“We’re thrilled to have contributed to this milestone project,” said Chryso North America
Mid-South District Manager Andrew Carmichael. “We work closely alongside our partners to set new standards to help move the industry forward. This project is a perfect example of that. Together, we’ve set a new standard in bridge deck rehabilitation, advancing both sustainability and structural resilience in the industry.”

In 2022, the Delaware River & Bay Authority (DRBA) launched a project to rehabilitate the northbound deck of the Delaware Memorial Bridge, a critical transit artery spanning the Delaware River. Partnering with UHPC Solutions (the General Contractor) and Ductal (the UHPC supplier), Chryso contributed high-range water-reducing admixtures that enhanced the Ultra-High Performance Concrete (UHPC), achieving more than three times the compressive strength of traditional bridge concrete. This innovation enabled a swift, resilient installation that minimized traffic disruption and construction impact. With over 5,000 cubic yards of UHPC installed, the bridge now has a durable, low-maintenance deck expected to last over 50 years, reducing both added weight and overall project costs.
